Herefordshire libraries - Summer reading challenge

Big Friendly read 


All Herefordshire Libraries are celebrating 100 years of the world’s favourite storyteller – Roald Dahl and The Big Friendly Read, Summer Reading Challenge 2016 is your chance to join in the celebrations which start on Saturday July 16.

Don't forget children can sign up to the Summer Reading Challenge and get a free collector folder to keep their special Big Friendly Read cards. The cards include Quentin Blake illustrations from some of Roald Dahl’s best-loved stories – they can collect all six cards as they read any library books of their choice from any library in Herefordshire. When they finish the challenge they receive a special gold medal and certificate.  

The Big Friendly Read starts on Saturday July 16 and runs through until Saturday September 10, with special free craft activity drop in events taking place at some libraries, so come along and have some whizzpopping family fun making things inspired by the Roald Dahl books, for children aged 4- 12 years old.  Come along any time between 10am and 1pm at :-

Ross-on-Wye Library  - Friday  August 5

Leominster Library  - Tuesday August  9

Hereford Town Hall -  Wednesday  August 10

Kington Library  -  Friday August 12

This year for the first time all Herefordshire Libraries will be running the Big Friendly Read Mini Challenge for toddlers. They’re never too young for books! 

Just come to any library and choose the books your child likes, share the stories together and collect stickers each time you visit. Collect all six Roald Dahl stickers to complete the Mini Challenge.

The Big Friendly Read has a dedicated website for children taking part in the Challenge. As well as keeping track of their progress online, kids can have all kinds of fun here! There are games and competitions, children can send messages, and even find out what to read next using the Book Sorter – it’s packed with recommendations for young readers. For more information  please visit

Don't forget The Big Friendly Book Bus

Big Friendly Book Bus

This summer holidays the Big Friendly Book Bus will be parked outside the Shirehall in Hereford.  The Book Bus is a children’s library and a place to sign up to the Summer Reading Challenge.  While Hereford Library is temporarily closed the School Library Service bus will provide a special space dedicated to reading for pleasure.

Books borrowed from the bus can be returned to any of the public libraries in Herefordshire.  There will be plenty of great books to choose from as the bus can carry 3,500 books!  

The Big Friendly Book Bus will be visiting from Saturday July 16 to Saturday August 27 on

Saturdays  10am to 2pm

Tuesdays to Fridays 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm
