Pupils from Walford Primary Schools are £500 better off thanks to poster competition winner Ebony Shepherd from year 3. Ebony’s poster will be printed and distributed to schools in Herefordshire and she will receive a framed copy.
Herefordshire Council’s Choose How You Move team ran the poster competition as part of their Be Bright Be Seen campaign, which offers advice to help travellers adjust to the differing conditions and keep safe on the move during the autumn and winter months.
Pupils from Walford School will have been learning the road safety message ‘Be Bright, Be Seen,’ which stresses the importance of children being easily seen near traffic. Being easily seen by drivers is an issue for all children, especially as many school uniforms are dark. Keeping children safe on their journeys to and from school can be helped by selecting a bright coat, providing fluorescent and reflective armbands or school bag.
Ms Louise George, Headteacher said, “we are really delighted that Ebony’s poster has won this competition and that the school will receive the £500 prize money which we will be putting it to good use .The safety of our pupils is paramount and the Be Bright Be Seen campaign gave us an opportunity to raise awareness with parents and children of the need to make sure that appropriate high viz clothing or accessories are worn on the school commute.”
Paul Deneen, Chair of Governers at Walford School added, “huge thanks to Herefordshire Council’s transportation team for their excellent efforts in emphasising the importance of travelling to school safely and sustainably, which is much appreciated.”
