Council responds to fracking speculation

Herefordshire Council is aware that there has been much speculation in the media over the past few weeks, concerning possible fracking sites in the county.

Fracking or hydraulic fracturing is the process of extracting natural gas from shale rock layers deep within the earth and the government has identified various areas in Herefordshire as possible prospecting sites, such as Eastnor and Fownhope.

Councillor Russell B Hamilton, cabinet member for environment, housing and planning, said: “Due to the depths required to prospect for natural shale gas, full planning permission would need to be obtained from the council and I can confirm that to date no such applications have been received.”

“Whilst we cannot rule out receiving any fracking applications in the future, the available geological maps suggest there are many more lucrative sites identified elsewhere in Britain, which are likely to be explored first.”
