Bookstart Bear opens book cave in Ross-on-Wye

Dens are great places to read and hang out in, particularly if you’re a bear or a small child and caves make great dens!  That’s the thinking behind a new book cave room which will be opened this week (15 June) at Herefordshire Council’s children’s centre in Ross-on-Wye.

Bookstart Bear and Councillor Jenny Hyde will officially open the new room as part of national book start week.  Families with small children are invited to come along and explore the magical cave and share the excitement of some of their favourite book characters.  There will be opportunity to join the local library and enjoy a special story time session with Bookstart Bear making a guest appearance, singing and dancing.

Once open, the new book cave will be available every week day from 9am-5pm where parents and children can explore the magic of books and stories using story sacks and themes like ‘walking in the jungle’.

There will be advice and support available for parents who want to learn more about sharing books with children, and families can enjoy a delicious fruity snack inspired by the story Handa’s Surprise by Eileen Browne.

Kim Gristy, Herefordshire Council, said “Dens are great places to stimulate young imaginations and as caves made great dens, we decided to turn one of our rooms into a cave where we could bring books to life.

“Staff at the centre are planning some exciting activities over the next few weeks so that children and adults visiting the cave have an enchanting experience and want to visit again.”
